Here at the Octagon, we usually dive into characters and stories that make St. Vermont so legendary. But today we're trying something new. We are calling Octagon Labs. A lot of the STO community members have connected with us over the last few months with ideas to start their own podcast. And this Lab's extension of the traditional Octagon format brings an episode from community members diving into a specific topic or passion that they have. And today's episode of Octagon Labs is Trivia Buzz with guest Laura Weber and Nancy Duran. Welcome to the Studio Lan. Laura. Nancy, thank you. Thank you. Happy to be here. So happy to be here. Mike, are we your first lab? You are actually our second lab. Oh, second lab number two. Yeah. Number two. That's not what you wanted to hear. Second's. Pretty good though. You ironed out the kinks. Second's pretty good. Yeah, exactly. So I've known Laura since I moved here. Yeah. 14. 14 years. Just about 14 years ago. Ago. Yeah. I think we met at the school the first, one of the first events they had there. I think we did. And we had the North shore of Massachusetts connection. We did. Yeah, exactly. So we immediately knew some of the same people. So I think for our listeners, tell us about yourselves and Trivia Buzz and the idea behind it. we are both obsessed with trivia. I've been on both Jeopardy and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and a show in Australia when I used to live there called Rock Whiz. I don't think I knew that part. Oh yeah. I had to sing actually. What? Oh wow. How did he not notice? Like American Idol kind of thing? it was, you have to finish singing the riff and then guess the song in artist? Yeah. Oh wow. it was hard. It was fun. It was fun. It was set in a pub in Melbourne, Australia and Laura, while you have a big pub trivia background. Yes. And nothing quite like your turns on all your game shows, but I have known myself some pub trivia. It's a good side hustle going back, I don't know, 30 years. Yeah. How many beer mugs do you have in your house? I just throw them away at this point. There's so many coozies I could equip like many bars. And don't you play, Mike, don't you play trivia too? We play trivia at Alfie occasionally. We're not diehards. Not die hards we're, I'm not very good at, so I can speak to this. We've been going for, I don't know, two years now. The only time our team has won Uhhuh was the time I wasn't there. Oh, no. Okay. That's not a good sign. don't tell anyone. I think we should give a shout out to Picasso, though. That's where we Oh, yes, absolutely. Shout out Picasso here in sto, Vermont. Yes. They've got a great trivia. Can I? Yeah, tonight, every Tuesday. Every Tuesday at Picasso. We've gotta be outta here pretty soon. Yeah, exactly. Exactly. Nice. I do have one question for Nancy Jeopardy. What's it like to be on Jeopardy? It is, it's stressful would be the first word I think of. It was a very exciting, but also very intimidating, very confronting. You are just up against the smartest people. Yeah. And everybody on who got on the show passed a test and were passed several tests and they basically know the answers to the questions and I'd say 80% of the questions, they know the answers, but it's, who's fastest on that buzzer. And who's more, most adept at the buzzer? Yeah. What kind of tests do they implement? there's an actual written test that you have to pass and you don't, you can take it as many times as you want, and eventually you'll get a call from them out of the blue and, oh, what? Who? and then there is a, I did it during the time of COVID, so it was a Zoom like interview and you mock play it against other people. Wow. And then they interview you a little bit about your background. They, they wanna have some interesting stories to talk about with you. And then you go again into a pool. It was 18 months to the day after that I got the call and Wow. They said, okay, in two months you need to be here in California. Amazing. Yeah. Cool. That's cool. It's pretty fun. Awesome. Alright, let's do trivia Buzz. Let's go. Exciting. Let's do it. Let's, thank you so much for having us and welcome to this bonus episode of Trivia Buzz. The trivia quiz game that serves up trivia with a twist. Here's a quick primer on how the game works. The game consists of five rounds of trivia questions that get progressively tougher as the rounds go on. If you wanna make a fun party game out of our pod, you can answer long using the scoring sheet on our website, trivia buzz pod.com. And. Our game is called Trivia Buzz, not only because we love trivia, but also because we love cocktails. And each episode we'll be sharing a cocktail with you. Today we have a cocktail, which we're going to introduce in a few minutes. This bonus episode will be a mini version Taylor made for our friends here at the Octagon. So without further ado, let's get into our game. Okay guys, this round is called Happy Hour, where the questions are one point each. First to business cocktails. Mike, I believe you got a favorite cocktail. This is my go-to Favorite cocktail. Vermont Whiskey Sour. Oh my God. What makes it Vermont? So traditional whiskey, sour is simple syrup. Vermont, take on that is maple syrup. Oh, of course. Yeah. So that's the real big difference. And then bitters. In the store bitters to help bring it out. So I do find. Take your traditional whiskey sour recipe. Use maple syrup, a dark maple syrup. Actually works the best. Gives it that robust flavor to balance the bourbon. I have turned a lot of people onto this drink that don't like bourbon as we're all tasting it right now. You don't taste the bourbon really. It's just a delicious summer cocktail. can we try it? Let's try it. Yeah, let's try it. Cheers. Cheers everyone. Cheers. Cheers. That is excellent. I love it. Yep. Refreshing, crisp. And we do have the mocktail version. Yes. Here we do. I'm enjoying that right now. Could you remind our listeners about Yes. What you made in that? So this, the bourbon version has two ounces of bourbon, two ounces of lemon juice, three quarters of an ounce of maple syrup, and three dashes of angas or bitters, shaken over ice, and then poured. Over a single ice cube. That's the way you like it, I believe, Mike. Yes, correct. For the mocktail version, we subbed out the bourbon with two ounces of dark brewed black tea. Yeah. English breakfast in this case. Yeah. How was it? it's delicious. Oh, so appreciate you making that effort for us non-drinkers out there. And anybody else listening, there is a mocktail option. I just have to chime in that I love any single drink that has maple syrup in it, and it's not just because we live here in Vermont. It's just, I love it. Have you ever had the maple margarita. no, they have that at backyard. Huh? It's so good. Yeah, it's so good to taste. I try make some syrup in a cocktail is It's great. It's delicious. And we in Vermont, we know maple syrup. Exactly. yeah. Do not use Aunt Jemima make syrup. No. All map syrup bowl. Thank you for that caveat. Do you cannot be using any sort of corn syrup ever or ever? Yeah. Or ever. If you don't need to put it in your fridge to keep it, then it's not real. Exactly. And fun fact about the whiskey sour. Yes. It was recorded in a recipe book by Jerry Thomas in 1862, the Bartender's Guide. However, it was definitely. Consumed before that, and that was by sailors on boats because it was a fight against scurvy because of the vitamin C, there's Oh, wow. So it's good for us. Nice. It's a good life. A hundred percent. you can add egg white. You know some whiskey sours do come with egg white. Really? Oh. If you get it at doc ponds, oh, you can order it with egg white and they'll put egg white in and shake it. You shake it before you put the ice in. The shaker then put the ice in and reshake it. And now you're getting protein. It's a full meal. Full meal. I love that all the food groups in dinner is served. Put a slice of bacon on it too. Exactly. The varnished. Forget it. Ted Mike, we love that you've invited us onto your show. But you know what that means, don't you? We think we know what that means. I have an idea. It means you're in the hot seat today. Hot seat. Have you ever done trivia, Ted? Man, live trivia. I've watched Jeopardy. Okay. that's good. That's good. That's start off. That's to start. That's the basic gist of it. I would say No, never been to trivia then. I've never been, I've been to Picasso during trivia while I was eating dinner. And I was like, oh, this is cool. Come, maybe this will entice you. Come, yeah. Maybe we'll give you a little. There's no way I lose to Ted. There's no way I lose to him. Oh no. Wait, I thought competitive thought we were team. I love the competition. I thought we were doing the team thing. That's fine. I'm kidding. Yeah, we're team. we're individual, but we've come together as a team at the end did team on to gun. Didn't I beat you in the derby? No you didn't. Total time. You did not. I'd beat you the ski. That would be the OW derby. Yeah. That's not the, that's not the event. The event was both. That's, but that's the most important, not of the two. It's the derby meister that is a ski race that is held in STO every year, and that might be a hint to what's going to happen here in a minute. All right. Okay. All our first round of trivia questions are for you because we live in a beautiful snow sports town, and because we know both of you two, love to. Hit the slopes. We thought we'd ask you some questions about the greatest winter sport there is skiing. Yes, sure is both. I bet it all. I bet it all. You bet it all. Okay, perfect. You feel confident on this one? We don't usually bet, it's not discourage. Yeah. How often do you guys ski in the winter? is it an everyday get a couple runs in the morning type of thing? We have different modes of skiing. So we're both pretty, even over a hundred days total on snow. Okay. And that's impressive that Nordic and Ted skins. Oh yeah. I do a lot of skiing. I also do some Nordic skiing, backcountry skiing. I'll ride the lifts on occasion. so yeah, it comes out to probably 120. Wow. give, that's a good season. Yeah. Give or take. That was. 70 days lift served. Yep. This year. Plus about 30 something skins. So Yeah. Yeah. we're we on snow a lot? you guys, we diversify. I don't wanna embarrass you, but I went I think five times this past winter. Okay. Okay. Hey, that's funny. That's five more than I feel like I've seen you there. 10. Back onto the slopes. Called out. What about you, Nancy? I, more than that, probably I think. 30 to 35. oh, that's legit. It's also maybe I'm going to beat her next year though. Yeah. Oh, for sure. It's not a competition. Yes. Everything's a competition as long as you're getting out there and having fun. Yeah, exactly. It's all good. Exactly. and besides sto, what other resorts do you guys. Like to visit when I'm, if I'm on the East Coast, it's just hard to leave still. Yeah. It's so great. be like, Hey, I'm gonna go to Sugarbush or anything like that. I lived out in Lake Tahoe for a couple years. Oh. no, I skied Heavenly. Yeah. Squaw Valley. It's actually named Uhhuh. Okay. Palisades. Tahoe now. Yeah, that was one of my favorites. I lived in Park City for a little bit. Oh yeah. So Snowbird Was probably pretty good. Probably those two. Jackson Hall I've been to a bunch. I'd say probably. You know those three. Nice. Been to Alaska skiing, oh, ESKA. How was that? It was amazing. Yeah. It's tricky though. I was there in March and they have so little light that the lifts were open from 10 to three. Wow. And that was in March. Wow. So I don't really know how they. Yeah, make money like two hours in the other months. But yeah, probably those four zones. those were some nice, was lucky. I grew up in STO and my parents had me on skis when I was probably three. Okay. They were just super into it, so pretty much ever since then, that's the way to do it. So you must have seen the town change quite a bit. Quite a lot. Yep. Seen it change a lot and there's pros and cons to that. You should talk about it on a podcast idea. Good idea. Let's start a podcast. Yeah. You guys should start a podcast. We say. Yeah. Yeah. Great idea. But honestly, for me, skiing and it's like breathing. I just, I'm at the point now, like I just, I don't even think about it. I just, I have all my gear and I wake up. Just go up. It's in your DNA now? Yeah. Yeah. It's just a big part of my life and like I said, my parents are, super into it, so that helped. Oh, that's wonderful. And I go in the mornings, so Ted's usually coming off the mountain at seven 30. Oh my gosh. And he'll text me and say, you gotta get up there, it's eight inches. And I'll go up, I ski before work, so I'll go off from eight to nine 15. Get six runs in and it's plenty of days. Ted's alerted me to the fact that it's way better than you think it's gonna be here. I love that you have your own personal snow report. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. That's pretty sweet. Lifetime. Mine is very unreliable'cause my husband goes early and he'll be, he'll just rave about it and I'll get there and he's really optimistic. he sees the snow roads. it is better it eat one of those. It is always better. That's what he always says it is. And I've started going to Europe last about four years ago now. We went to St. Anton, Austria. So we became enamored with skiing in Europe. So this year we're gonna the Dolomites. Oh. Oh wow. I've always wanted to go there. You would love it. It's awesome. Blue cruising, mixed with great food and great Ry ski. So it's say no more. It's a really nice vibe. Could do live recording. Oh, we're in Italy. There we go. Oh, that is a, yeah. Podcast rental equipment. Lemme tuck that. Ship it over or something. All right. Having heard all this, we have every confidence in you guys. You're going to, oh my God. We're gonna nail that one. We're gonna nail this. Are you ready? I'm ready. All right, ready? All right, let's go. So we have 10 questions for you. All right. And we're gonna give you time to think and let our lovely listeners jot down their answers. So we'll go through all the 10 questions and giving you time to think, and then we'll go back through them and get your responses. Question one. The modern day version of what Snow Sport equipment was invented in Vermont in 1977. Question two, what Mountain Academy did Mikayla Shiffrin get her start at question three? I. I saw you guys scribbling furiously. Yes. It was a competition to get it down. First one that, I just can't remember his name. Just one. That's pretty impressive. Mike. Which one was that? the flying tomato. Oh yeah, I got you there. I think they were using our scoring sheet, which is on trivia, the tomato. Oh, that's right. Technically isn't skiing though, if I'm thinking of the right name. No, that is true. Okay. Did I didn't say Scott, did I? Anyway, we'll start at the top. Yeah. Okay, question one. The modern day version of what Snow Sport Equipment was invented in Vermont in 1977. Snowboard snowboarded. Yeah. Correct. Yeah. Jake Burton. By Jake Burton. Jake, yeah. Jake lived in this town. What do you call the stance on a snowboard where the right foot is forward? Goofy. Goofy. Correct. Oh my gosh. These guys know their stuff. Number four, nail it. I'm not. I think I, oh, okay. Okay. Let me remind the listeners. Question four was, who is the most decorated American male downhill skier? I wrote Phil Mayer, Bodie Miller. That is correct. It's Bodie Miller? Yes. Oh, Phil Mayer. I didn't, I thought he was doing more kind of freestyle bumps. Really? Mayor Brothers competition. Anyway, I got it wrong. It was a good guess though. Mike, look up Phil Mayer. I may have to protest that one. Okay, we'll put it in the chat. We do know the number Bode Miller one. How many times he won. Yeah. Six Olympic medals. Did he? Yeah. And he won the World Cup overall Championship twice. Yeah. Probably the last American. and even besides that, I was like maybe Tommy Mo. Yeah. Or something like that. But yeah. historically, Americans haven't not done great. It's usually Norwegians, Austrian. Americans like to invent new sports to that we can win like snowboarding. Yeah. At least for a aboard cross snowboard. Cross. Okay. Got it. Half pipe. And Mikayla Schiffrin obviously blows the men outta the park. Exactly. On another level. Yep. Alright. That was my, I think my alternate answer is an epic skier. oh, what me and my friends call, you know when you like go out on a super busy Saturday. Yes. And people are all there and they just really don't know how to ski. They don't come very often. They're there for the first time, the most dangerous day winter. We just call'em epic skiers'cause they have epic passes. I was gonna say, if there's Ference, epic, epic Pass, of course. Okay. I, you know what? There's another term I use to call those kind of skiers. The Laura Weber? No, I've, I can attest that's not true. I actually have another alternate game. So when I first moved here, or even before I moved here, they used to do canned food day. You may remember this. yeah. If you brought a can of food To donate to the food bank, STO would give you a free Lyft ticket. It was like a November. I love that. It was great. Great program that, but keep in mind it's November, there's one trail open, right? Yeah. And 6,000 people show up with a can of food to ski for free. Oh. And it was chaos on the one inch of snow. So we call it canned, that we always call that canned food day whenever it's super crowded. Alternate day. Great. Oh god, these are great. Question six was what new ski discipline will be added to the 2026 Olympics in Milano? Corina isn't S Schmo. I wrote S Schmo Alpine Touring. It is Schema. Yeah. Sche Mountaineering Racing up. I bet Europeans are gonna be really good at that. look forward to seeing that. Question seven. When skiers turn, they tend to push snow into small piles called what? Ogles Mogul. Yes. Okay. I didn't, you didn't know it. Yeah. No, I know. It felt too like obvious mogul. Yeah. So does that mean now you're even Yes, I think you think so. For even you both have six. Okay. Question eight, what? Olympian is known as the flying tomato. Sean White. That is correct. Oh, you're kicking yourself. Mark. You like I pictured him. I can picture him. What French term is synonymous with the term groomed trail? Peaced. Correct. I didn't know that. Yeah.'cause like off east on Overall Square, we're all square. Yeah. You're off your, you. Oh my gosh. You're eight and eight or eight? Eight. Eight and eight. Eight, eight. Okay. Wow. And the last question, who is the patron saint of skiing? I have a guess, but I don't know. Stein Erickson? no. He's the patron saint of the Alps in snowboarding, hiking, backpacking, and mountaineering. Wow. He lived in the 11th century, so this is way back. That's pretty cool. You didn't know him personally that I didn't know that We did. All right. Yeah. You guys did eight outta 10 state good questions. And as a team we would had'em, all those really good. We would've had'em all. But the last one. Yep. Yeah. Excellent questions. Okay. So the lesson is work together. Yes. That was fun. Really. Ni good questions. Really good. Good questions. All right.
